Money Matters – the euro

The euro is the official currency of the European Union. The euro was created in 1999 and is often called the EU’s ‘single currency’. This is because the euro has replaced the old currencies of thirteen EU countries (also referred to as EU Member States) which means that these thirteen countries now use the same kind of money. Collectively, these states are called the ‘euro zone’.

Just like other currencies, there are euro coins and euro notes. There are eight euro coins and each coin has a ‘European’ side and a ‘national’ side. The European side shows a map of the Union.

The other side of the coin is kept for special designs chosen by each euro zone country. It’s the perfect way to teach other European citizens about your culture and customs!
