When you are creating a slide show in Kid Pix, the file you save (with the extension .SHO) is actually a list of pointers. This means that if you have a set of bitmap images inserted in a slide show, the file saved will not contain the images themselves, but simply pointers to the bitmaps’ locations on the hard disk. This implies two things:

1. The slide show’s pointers contain absolute addresses of the bitmaps’ locations, ie. they have a complete directory listing. For instance, if, while creating a slide show, you accessed a bitmap from C:/Project/Pictures\pic1.bmp, the slide show pointer will keep a precise record of the location of the file, found in the hard disk C:/, in the folder Project and in the subfolder Pictures.
2. Since the pictures are not actually included in the slide show, it is not enough to put the slide show .SHO file on another computer. You will need to transfer the actual bitmap files as well.

You must be careful when transferring the files. If we keep the same example as above, and you have transferred the slide show from your Notebook to one of the classroom computers, the slide show will look for the file pic1.bmp in the classroom computer’s C:/Project/Pictures/ path. If this does not exist on the computer, the slide show will only display a small sample of the image and the file not found message.

To avoid this you must therefore be careful where you originally create the BMP files in the first place. Keep a note of the exact location, and then re-create that path on the destination computer. To keep things simple, create a folder in the root directory of your Notebook’s hard disk (ex. C:/KPShows), and save all your bitmap graphics and slide shows there. Re-create the same directory on the classroom computers, and whenever you move a new slide show, save it there, together with all the related bitmap images. In this way, Kid Pix will always be able to find the necessary files and the slide shows will work properly.
