What is Win Zip? - Extracting Archived Files

Insert the floppy with the Zip file, and double click on its icon. Double click on the Zip file

WinZip will open the archive and list the files in it. There can be files as well as folders, and you can extract these all at once or separately. Click on the file you want to extract, and then on the Extract button.

The Extract requester will appear. In the Extract to textfield, type the folder where you wish to have the file extracted. Alternatively, you can browse through the Folders/drives list and select the location from there. The Files section enables you to extract only selected files or the whole archive. You can create a specific folder for the extracted file by clicking on the New Folder button. When you have decided where to extract the file, click on the Extract button.

Extraction will start immediately. Note the progress bar at the bottom of the WinZip window. The red operation button is also on. When extraction is complete, the green button will turn on.

Close WinZip and go to the location where the file was extracted, and double click on the file. The computer should read it without any problems.

Extracting files in this way is very easy as long as WinZip is also installed on the host computer. But what if you would like to give the files to a friend who does not have WinZip installed on the computer? This requires the creation of a self-extracting file. We will cover this in the next instalment .
